Annual Community Climate Survey

In support of transparency, two-way dialogue and collaborative decision-making, Keller ISD is reaching out to our parents and community members to ensure that everyone has an equal say as we work toward improving the education we provide to all our students.

Today, I am asking you to voice your opinions about Keller Independent School District. This is the first in a series of communication initiatives that will give each of you a voice in our ongoing conversation to improve our school system.

Working with independent research and communication firm K12 Insight, we will be launching a Central Office Climate Survey on Monday, April 29, 2013 in which we ask you to rank instructional goals, facility issues, and Career and Technical Education priorities; share your level of satisfaction with district leadership, and which qualities you feel are most critical for teachers to possess; and tell us your preferred methods of receiving district information, among other issues.

If we have your email address, you will receive an email invitation to participate in the survey. The survey will also be accessible through a link posted on the District's Web site at www.KellerISD.net. If necessary, you may request a paper survey by contacting the KISD Communications Department at 817-744-1021. The goal is to ensure widespread participation.

Please note that K12 Insight will provide us with reports and analysis in such a way that your feedback will remain completely anonymous and confidential, and your identity will not be associated with your response.

Once the survey has closed on May 13, 2013, I will come back to you with results, along with an explanation of how we plan to use the data to make critical decisions that will affect our 39 campuses serving more than 33,000 students.

A key component of the district's strategic plan, this and future surveys will help us build and foster relationships with all our stakeholders by engaging in ongoing candid conversations. Only by working together and earning your trust can we best achieve our mission of educating our students to achieve their highest standards of performance by engaging them in exceptional opportunities.

Sincerely,

Dr. Randy Reid
Superintendent of Keller ISD

Keller ISD Casey's Kids Fun Run
The 2013 edition of the Keller ISD Casey's Kids Fun Run will be held Saturday, May 11 at the KISD Natatorium.

Proceeds from the 5K run benefit KISD families in need. All proceeds are kept locally and distributed by KISD School Counselors.

The event began as an idea by long-time KISD counselor Janie Casey who wanted to create a way for families to support each other by providing monetary donations toward purchasing necessities for KISD students in need, all while providing an outlet for enjoyment, exercise, and socialization. The result was a "Fun Run" where families could participate together to support a worthy and noble cause.

Early registration is due by Friday, April 5 to guarantee a Casey's Kids Fun Run t-shirt, but late registration will be accepted up until 7:15 a.m. the day of the event. DEADLINE EXTENDED to April 12th

The Casey's Kids Fun Run Registration Form is attached.

Casey's Kids Fun Run will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, and will be held at the KISD Natatorium, 1000 Bear Creek Parkway.

Cook's Childrens Newsletter - Reducing the Stress of STAAR

10 ways to avoid the stress of STAAR™

Today's students have greater demands than ever before, with homework and a greater emphasis on scoring high on tests like the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR).

Watch video on YouTube
Avoiding the stress of standardized tests

STAAR exams are scheduled over the next couple of months. There's a lot of anxiety to score high on these benchmark tests. With all the pressures kids face today, they don't always handle the stress well. For them, success is black or white ... I pass or I fail – with nothing in between. Sleeping less or not at all happens often, which can cause children to be tired, irritable and short-tempered.

You might be surprised to learn that the kids who stress the most are often the ones who study hardest, do their homework and perform exceptionally well during the rest of the school year. But often times, because these are the ones who are perfectionists, they worry the most, don't handle mistakes and place a ton of pressure on themselves. They are the most susceptible to stress.

Parents can help by making sure that children plan accordingly for testing days at school. Find out from your children and the school how they're doing and if there is a likelihood of them not performing well on these exams. This will help alleviate fears by pacing preparation for the tests, creating a plan to help kids succeed and encouraging them to problem-solve their worries.

Here are steps you can take to help your child during this stressful time:

  1. Ask for help. If your child is especially anxious about test taking, set up a meeting with the teacher and school counselor to come up with a plan to ease fears on test day.
  2. Go online and get sample items of practice tests from previous years and, if needed, practice with your children at home.
  3. Practice deep breathing exercises at home. Then on test day, they will be able to put these practices into action.
  4. Make sure your child gets plenty of rest. Studies have found that people who get 8 hours of sleep before taking a math test are nearly 3 times more likely to figure out the problem than people who stay awake all night.
  5. Control your children's anxiety by making sure they are prepared. Focus on good study habits and the importance of not waiting until the last minute to cram before the test. There's still time. Also, make sure your child has everything he or she needs going into the test. Even if it's a new sharpened pencil. Make a check list the night before to avoid stress.
  6. Stay away from entertainment as test time approaches. It's not easy, but your child needs to study and not spend all night watching TV, looking at Facebook® or being on the computer. You can wait on that until after the test.
  7. Help your child keep mistakes in perspective. Everyone makes them and nobody is perfect. As you move closer to tests and studying, use wrong answers as a learning opportunity.
  8. Eat right. Make sure your child has had enough sleep, exercise and healthy food. Avoid heavy food or desserts that may upset the stomach. Avoid high-sugar foods that may keep your child up all night and make sure your child has a healthy breakfast (low-sugar cereal or oatmeal) the morning of the test.
  9. Expect distractions. Let your child know someone in the class will have the sniffles. Some kid will be banging his pencil on the desk. Someone may be humming. Those kids have their own stress. Just warn your child this is going to happen, but don't let it be a bother.
  10. After testing is completed, create ways to celebrate with your child. What you want to focus on in this celebration is the success of managing their stress, and not whether they passed or failed, which they won't know for weeks.

8th Annual School Walk for Diabetes
Keller ISD has teamed up with The American Diabetes Association yet again to host the 8th Annual School Walk for Diabetes on Saturday, April 13 from 9 - 11:30 a.m. at the Keller ISD Athletic Stadium.
Nearly 100 Keller ISD students suffer from type 1 diabetes along with an undetermined number of children at risk for type 2. Approximately 23.6 Americans have diabetes and more than 5 million of them do not even know they have the disease. By participating in School Walk for Diabetes, students at Keller ISD actively learn life-long lessons about preventing diabetes and helping others who have the disease.
Funds raised from School Walk for Diabetes will help further the mission of the American Diabetes Association: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
Keller ISD was recently recognized by the American Diabetes Association for being the No. 1 fundraising district in North Texas, as well as placing among the Top Five in the nation after having raised over $35,000 at the March 2012 Walk. This outstanding effort is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of Keller High School Nurses Debbie Gregor and Debbie Hooker, along with each and every one of the KISD nurses who come together every year to help support this great cause.
To learn about how your team or school can join the American Diabetes Association’s School Walk for Diabetes, call Debbie Gregor at 817-744-1420 or e-mail deborah.gregor@kellerisd.net.

Join us this Friday for our 5th Annual Posada: Celebrations Around the World!

We are planning our 5th Annual WRES Posada: Celebrations Around the World, and we would like for all our WRES parents to be part of this family event.  Our 3rd grade students will be singing holiday songs. The other grade levels will work on cultural artwork in their art class to help decorate for this event. This will be a school wide celebration planned for Friday, December 7th from 6:00p.m. -8:00p.m.

The celebration will include:  featuring 3rd grade, breaking some piñatas, & food tasting (a sampling of food from your heritage/culture).  We encourage you to bring a family favorite dish/meal to share with our school families.

Our 4th Grade Team will be selling drinks for their Camp Grady Spruce field trip fundraiser.  WRES library will be hosting a Book Fair during our Posada and our PTA Christmas Shop will also be open during this event.

We would like for you and your family to be part of this exciting event and have a taste of our diversity here at WRES!
