ISMS: Where Every Person is Valued and Adds Value!
The ISMS vision articulates the kind of organization we strive to be.
We hope for every person who is part of the ISMS Family (students, staff, parents, families, community) to feel as though he or she is valued by others within our organization.
At the same time our vision challenges us to treat others within the ISMS Family as though we value them. This means we show consideration, courtesy, and kindness to one another.
Finally, as part of the ISMS Family, we each must strive daily to add value to our organization. We do this by taking pride in our school and community and reciprocating deeds of charity and service.
If we as members of the ISMS Family give our best effort to be valuable to our school and community, while treating each other as valued members of the family, we will indeed achieve and perpetuate our vision!
The ISMS Family enjoyed a spirited time together in our pep rally this afternoon. Led by the cheerleaders, StuCo, PALs, ISMS Band, and Infinity Show Choir, we celebrated the accomplishments of our football teams, volleyball teams, and the cast and crew of Tom Sawyer.
We are thankful that so many of our kids choose to be engaged in school and show their Eagle spirit every day! 11/13/2009
ISMS is proud to pilot another "Green" initiative through its paperless grading project. Through GradeSpeed, we have the capability to make this happen, and two of our grade level teams - the 7th Grade Wolverines and the 8th Grade Patriots - are leading the charge.
Parents of students on the Wolverines and Patriots teams were given notice of the effort during the first two weeks of this grading period. Over this weekend and through 8 AM Tuesday, November 17, each parent on these two teams is asked to view his/her student's 3-week progress report and send an e-mail to his/her Structure teacher to verify having viewed it. Of course parents may choose to print the reports at home as well.
Electronic grade reports will become unavailable Tuesday at 8 AM. Parents on the two pilot teams who do not have Gradespeed access may request a paper copy of the progress report.
Traditional printed progress reports will be issued to students on the four teams not included in the pilot. Our plan is to pilot the program during the second nine-week grading period and then expand it to all teams for the third and fourth nine-week grading periods.
Our Student Council officers are attending a leadership conference with Mrs. Gresham and Mrs. Shropshire this weekend. I eagerly anticipate the great things they will bring back to our school. They have given so much already.
This week our StuCo kids have inspired students and teachers campus-wide to donate toys, hygiene items, and small gifts for Operation Christmas Child. The organization supports needy children who otherwise would not receive holiday gifts.
Another remarkable and unique activity the StuCo students have started is the Watt Watchers program. Students on the environmental committee keep other students and ISMS staff on their toes with regard to conserving energy. They taped to the door of every classroom and office three lightbulbs, and our goal is to keep all three. If a StuCo member catches someone failing to conserve energy (for example leaving a light or television monitor on when the room is not occupied), he/she will take away one light bulb. It's a fun way to keep us all aware!
It was such a joy to see our kids interacting with some 30 American veterans in the library last Wednesday morning. Our kids brought their favorite veterans, including parents, grandparents, other relatives, and friends to enjoy breakfast, hear our choir, and let us thank them for their service. What a great experience and honor for us all!
ISMS students and staff also dressed up this week in honor of our veterans. On Wednesday, we wore camouflage; Thursday we wore red, white, and blue; and Friday was yellow ribbon day. 11/5/2009
I never cease to be amazed at the student leadership capacity on this campus! In case you have not noticed, our students are quite busy!
Student Council (StuCo) has brought us a number of initiatives to improve our campus this year, not the least of which include their participation in the KHS Homecoming Carnival, their Scare Away Hunger campaign, the student school supplies collection they conducted early in the year, and their most recent venture--the ISMS Veterans' Day Breakfast coming November 11.
National Junior Honor Society is alive and well with almost 200 members who actively serve in a wide variety of community service capacities throughout our community.
How about those Eagle Cheerleaders! These young ladies, while juggling a schedule full of practices for upcoming national competition and games at which they support our athletic teams, still find time to participate in community events like Run In The Dark, Casey's Kids Fun Run, and the KHS/CHS homecoming parades.
Our publications staff has initiated the impressive Eagles Nest newsletter--a completely student-generated chronicle of the life and times at ISMS. They also have instituted a student-selected teacher of the month and student of the month program.
Our newest student leadership program, PALs, has made its presence known at ISMS already. They have been hard at work mentoring their peers and raising funds to travel to our feeder campuses to mentor younger KISD students. Their biggest fund rasier thus far, the ISMS Dodge Ball Tournament was a great success, and already the PALs have planned community service projects including visits to nursing homes, working with disadvantaged families, and hosting a dog show in the spring to benefit a local no-kill animal shelter.
Keller High Principal Rick Westfall once wisely said, "In a school this size, there are far more kids than there are adults. Who are really our campus leaders?" I think that sums it up well. ISMS is in good hands.
Our staff is really excited about the new technological resources that have been made available to us thus far, and we eagerly anticipate more to come!
It has been great to see the new projector, screen, and speaker arrangements installed in all our standard classrooms. Soon to accompany those will be document cameras and additional resources in our library, music rooms, cafeteria, and other learning spaces throughout the building.
While these items alone sound relatively modest in scope, the foundation they lay and the capacity they build for greater integration of student technology with learning is remarkable.
Our staff is making the transition to using campus funds for student technology more than standard paper and printing expenses. Examples of this include moving to web-based and video campus announcements instead of reading them from paper via a public address system, sending news to parents and community electronically instead of mailing paper notifications, and an interesting pilot program in which we will convey progress reports and grade reports to parents electronically (initially with an option for parents who prefer paper reports to still receive them).
We are just in the beginning stage of the transition, but we are grateful for the ability to move in this direction! 10/30/2009
We are excited about an upcoming site visit from a group of band directors out of Norman Oklahoma! The band directors are coming to Keller ISD to observe the exceptional feeder pattern program that leads to high levels of success in the bands at ISMS and Keller High School.
The group plans to obeserve and visit with band classes at Keller High, South Keller Intermediate, and Indian Springs on November 2. 10/29/2009
The ISMS Family builds a culture of excellence that promotes achievement for every learner.
While this is a very brief statement, it holds a great deal of meaning for the students, parents, families, and staff of ISMS--or the ISMS Family. The ISMS campus leadership team and campus educational improvement committee (CEIC) carefully selected the words of this mission to clearly articulate our purpose and mission in a statment concise enough to be quotable.
The phrase culture of excellence speaks to an innate continuous improvement effort and drive to be the very best organization we can be in every aspect.
The words promotes and achievement were intentionally placed to show a present and continuing action to foster the growth of every member of the ISMS family.
My favorite two words in the ISMS mission statement are every learner. Every is a unique word in that it refers to individuals, whereas a word like all connotes lumping everyone into the same group. If we are truly to add value to people, we must recognize that each person is an individual with unique characteristics and needs.
When we speak of the learner, we refer not only to our students, but also to the adults who support our kids. ISMS staff members are certainly learners, and our campus continues its commitment to developing leaders from within our staff to bring about constant, job-embedded engagement in professional learning. Parents and community as our partners are also learners, and we are committed to supporting our parents by providing them with tools to meaningfully converse with kids about academic and social growth.
Finally, ISMS is focused on being a learner-centered campus. We want to see the students engaged in the work of the classroom, and our measure of success comes in the products students develop as they learn. The schoolhouse of the past is no longer sufficient to prepare our students to lead in a global economy and ever-changing world. Our teachers must facilitate as our students inquire and discover. ISMS Family, I thought I would try this method of communication instead of the traditional newsletter, as a newsletter tends to be formal and limited in its scope while being cumbersome to assemble.
I hope you will find my blog site to be just as informative as a newsletter would be, as well as more insightful and timely.
We have LOTS of wonderful things going on at ISMS, so I anticipate I will post messages very regularly. Please know how much I have enjoyed working with our great group of kids this year. Our students are active leaders on our campus, and they consistently model positive character traits. This year is off to a great start, and I appreciate your partnership in building a culture of excellence that promotes achievement for every learner!
