 The Parkwood Prospect

Pros●pect (n) – anticipation; expectation; a looking forward

Good morning Parkwood Hill family,

The week ahead will be a busy one for our students and staff, but should be a lot of fun as well.  In addition to important learning that will take place, our sixth graders will make their 7th grade course selections, our kids will share the excitement of Candy Grams (see below), and our campus will end the week with an exciting and powerful presentation entitled "Dream, Dare, Do!"

If you will, please review each section of the Prospect below, as new information has been added to most sections, including the February calendar.  If your child is interested in learning golf, or improving her game, I also want to draw your attention to the "After-School Programs" section below.  We're excited about Golf Squad starting this spring!

As always, I hope you have a fantastic week ahead!

Giving you my "Bulldog Best, Never Less,"

Brad Tyler, Principal

Candy Grams for Sale!  Last Day! - Our House Council is excited to be selling Candy Grams!  For $2, your child can send a Candy Gram to any student or staff member on Valentine's Day!  Candy grams consist of a full-size candy, such as M&M's or Skittles, and a note of kindness, appreciation, or encouragement.  This is a fun way for our bulldogs to show they care for their friends and teachers, and proceeds will directly support our house system!  Please encourage your child to purchase candy grams before school, or during their lunch period.

7th Grade Course Registration Opens - All sixth grade students will make initial course selections for 7th grade while receiving assistance from the Hillwood Middle School counseling team.  This will take place either Monday (2/13) or Tuesday (2/14).  Parents, once your child inputs his course selections, you will receive an automated e-mail with instructions for reviewing his choices.  A link within the e-mail will allow you to make changes until Friday, March 3.  If you have any questions regarding the 7th grade registration process, please contact the Hillwood Middle School counseling team at (817) 744-3350.

Wednesday, February 15

Middle School Cheerleading Tryout Meeting, 7:00 p.m. at Hillwood MS - Sixth graders interested in participating in middle school cheerleading must attend a mandatory tryout meeting with their parent.  While there have been multiple opportunities to attend throughout the month of February, the last opportunity to attend one of these mandatory meetings is Wednesday evening (7:00 p.m.) at Hillwood Middle School.  Please attend to learn more about middle school cheerleading in Keller ISD.

Thursday, February 16

Positive Proof Child ID Program – During lunch, representatives from Positive Proof will be on site to register students whose parents have submitted applications to participate.

Monday, February 20

No School – Student Holiday - Monday, February 20 is a Professional Development Day for our teachers.

KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE

Flu & Seasonal Illness Precautions – The number of families reporting student absences due to influenza (flu), flu-like symptoms, or similar illnesses has risen recently.  Please encourage your child to wash his hands regularly, cover his mouth/nose when sneezing/coughing, and avoid touching his face unless his hands are clean.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends your child remain home if he has a fever of 100 degrees F or above, and/or is suffering with diarrhea/vomiting.  Students should be free of these symptoms for at least 24 hours before returning to school.  Please prevent the spread of illness by being mindful of these precautions.

Spinal Screening – All fifth grade students are scheduled to participate in routine spinal screenings during their PE class on Monday, February 27 or Tuesday, February 28.  Information regarding these screenings will be sent home in advance.  If a parent does not wish for her child to participate in the screening process, she must notify our school nurse using the form provided with the initial screening information (coming home soon).  If you have questions, please contact our campus nurse at Trisha.Britton@KellerISD.net.

Vaccination Information for Sixth Graders – Current sixth grade students are required to have multiple vaccinations before 7th grade, and will not receive a middle school class schedule until updated shot records have been received.  The required vaccinations are Meningococcal, Booster Tdap, and a second Varicella shot.  For details regarding upcoming immunization clinics in Keller ISD, please click here.

GET INVOLVED

Register to "Run for Change" - The Annual "Run for Change" 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run, sponsored by Fellowship of the Parks, will take place on Saturday, April 8!  Money raised benefits the counseling departments of Keller ISD, Northwest ISD, and Grapevine-Colleyville ISD; and is used to raise awareness for adolescent suicide prevention.  For more details, view the flyer here.

Encourage Your Bulldog Filmmaker! - Encourage your child to enter the 9th Annual KISD Film Festival!  It's a fun, fantastic opportunity for our kids to demonstrate their creativity.  This year, there are seven categories- Story, Documentary, Comedy, PSA Plus, Animation, Music Video, and the all-new "Weekend Challenge."  Movies in the Weekend Challenge category must be made March 3-6, and submitted by March 6.  All remaining category entries are due March 20, and an Oscars-style awards ceremony will be held to celebrate winners on May 11.  We'd love to have several bulldog films submitted!  Full details can be found by visiting www.kellerisd.net/film.

Collect Box Tops for Education - Please remember to save your Box Tops for Education labels!  Every label equals 10 cents and helps provide educational programs for our students.  Whether neatly trimmed or roughly torn, when you send in a baggie of labels with your student and homeroom teacher's name affixed, our PTA will do the rest!

Register to Volunteer - If you plan to volunteer on our campus this year, or to serve as a field trip chaperone, please make sure you have successfully completed a 2016-2017 KISD volunteer application.  Interested parents/guardians must apply online by accessing the application here.

"PROSPECT-IVE" SOLUTIONS

If you have solutions, concerns, or praise that can serve to make Parkwood Hill a better place for our kiddos, please fill out a brief, online feedback form by clicking here.  When using the form, you can choose to share your name, or to remain anonymous.

CONSIDER AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS OR PROGRAMS

Golf Squad – Does your bulldog want to learn golf or improve her game?  PHIS is proud to be one of the first campuses in Keller ISD to host Golf Squad!  It's a new program (fee required) that will teach your child the essentials of golf, with instruction provided by a PGA professional.  The class will meet at Parkwood Hill Wednesdays in the spring, and will include 8 after-school sessions.  Check out details by viewing the flyer here, or visiting the registration site here.

PHIS Art Club – A select few spots are still available in our Parkwood Hill Art Club.  If your child is interested in participating, please e-mail Mrs. Christa.Whitmire@KellerISD.net to check availability, and then complete the permission slip here.

Young Rembrandts, Drawing Classes for Kids – Registration for Young Rembrandts' (paid program) Winter Session is now open, and classes began February 1.  Click here to register.

Is your child interested in other after-school programs?  While Keller ISD no longer distributes non-school flyers in student Tuesday folders, you can find program information on the district's Community Flyers page.  Find it under the "Community" tab of the KellerISD.net website, or by clicking here.
