 Elementary Music Instruction in KISD

General music instruction begins in kindergarten as all elementary children work with certified music specialists through the fifth grade. Participation in the district elementary honor choir is offered to fourth graders.  Students are engaged in a variety of activities where they listen to music of the highest quality and sing, move, and perform a rich mixture of folk, seasonal, and patriotic music. Most of the teachers use Kodaly and Orff techniques.  Most elementary schools have an after school honors choir.

 Van Cliburn Musical Awakenings Award

Susan Robertson, Director of Education for the Van Cliburn Foundation, announced Keller ISD as the as the recipient of the 2009 Van Cliburn Foundation Musical Awakenings Program.   The district will be provided 8 programs this school year targeted to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students.  Each program is about 40 minutes long with a question and answer time after each program.  The programs feature both a host (facilitator) and pianist.  The programs are interactive, and include the foundation bringing a grand piano and other visual aids/props for the program.  Written study guides that incorporate the programs into the TEKS curriculum are made available to all participating campuses.
The Foundation has presented music education programs to area elementary students for the past 10 years.  These programs are presented at no cost to the schools.  Funding for the Keller ISD area comes from the ARTSNET Foundation.  Schools selected for the programs are Caprock Elementary, North Riverside Elementary, Parkview Elementary, and Whitley Road Elementary.

 KISD Elementary Honor Choir

2008 marked the 6th year of the annual KISD Elementary Music Clinic Concert.  The idea of this clinic and concert was born from a group of teachers anbd their desire to create an elementary honor choir.  Budget constraints and denied grant requests did not hault the vision of these educators. They envisioned a one-day clinic and concert similar to the format of the middle school and high school all-region groups. For the 6th year in a row, the 22 outstanding elementary educators in KISD gathered funds from the district fine arts budget, campus budgets, principal funds, and the PTA to be able to offer this unique opportunity to 4th graders in Keller.

Auditions were held in the fall, and seven 4th grade students were selected from each elementary campus to comprise the 2008-2009 All-District Elementary Choir. These students worked on the music at home and with their teachers after school.  During the clinic on November 7, 2008, they worked with their peers oin musical concepts, terms, and various approaches to the music as they rehearsed for the concert that evening. Cecile Johnson was the clinician and conductor of the choir. She brought an energy and love of music which was evidenced by her conducting that night. Johnson offered a great deal of expertise and talent to both our students and teachers.

Without the tremendous support from the staff and administration from each campus, and particularly the devotion of each of the elementary music teachers, this annual event would not be possible.  Thanks to all the members of the choir and their parents for making this music experience so outstanding in KISD.
