 Band Instruction in KISD

The band program begins at the intermediate school level in the sixth grade and students have the opportunity to continue through the twelfth grade.  Beginning classes focus on the development of correct musical and performance skills.  In most cases, students are divided in "like-instrument" classes.  In addition to further development of their basic fundamental skills, these bands offer a variety of performance opportunities including concerts, pep rallies, football games and UIL contests. Students are encouraged to participate in individual events such as Solo & Ensemble Contest All-Region, Area, and State Auditions.

 TMEA State Honor Band Finalists

Keller ISD’s Fossil Hill Middle School Honor Band was named as a Texas Music Educators Association State Honor Band Finalist for 2008. The ensemble took sixth place out of fourteen finalists from across the state.

The group competed at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in a field of 14 other bands. The top seven bands are recognized as State Finalists, and the winner of the competition will perform at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in 2008.

Fossil Hill Middle School’s Band, led by head Director Darlene Janeski, performed a demanding program including Torch of Liberty by Karl King, Joy Revisited by Frank Ticheli, and Longford Legend by Robert Sheldon.

“The FHMS has made us all extremely proud,” says KISD Fine ArtsDirector David Stevens. “The directors from FHMS have made a huge commitment to serve these young students and lead them to the highest achievement in the state of Texas.”

 CHS Band Highlights

The Charger Brigade began the 2008-2009 school year with a new sense of optimism for a state competition year.  The new marching show “Under a Russian Sky” highlighted the musicianship of the band with solos, and special performances by various sections of the band, and also showcased a larger and more dynamic color guard than in previous years.  This year also featured substantial successes for the band.  The band made school history on October 4, by taking top honors in its classification at the US Scholastic Band Association Marine Corps Invitational North Texas regional competition, winning the 1st place trophy for Division V Open.  The band also took caption awards for Best Percussion, Best Color Guard, and Best Visual Effect.  This was just part of a successful marching season, as the band made a Division I at UIL to advance to the Area marching competition in Odessa.  While the band did not advance to the regional finals, the performance at the Area preliminary competition was most outstanding.

The Drumline took its “Witches of Venice” show to PASIC, Lone Star Classic Drum Line Competition, and North Texas Colorguard Association (NTCA) Winter Guard International competitions. During the winter competitions, Central took first place at the January competition at Juan Seguin High School with a net score of 67.35.  In the February competition hosted by James Bowie High School, Central turned in a higher score of 71.35 for a third place finish.  In March, at the NTCA Championships, Central improved its performance again with a final score of 81.25, achieving a second place finish.  The Drumline was also well represented in that five members of the line successfully auditioned for the independent Drumline “Surround Sound” and helped Surround Sound reach the finals at the WGI Marching Percussion Championship in Dayton, Ohio.

2008-2009 Accomplishments

Outstanding UIL Sweepstakes Record
All 4 competing band ensembles from Keller High School earned Sweepstakes Awards at the Region 2 UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest this year! This is an incredibly rare accomplishment not only for Keller High School, but also for the Keller School District and State of Texas.  This marks the first time in Keller School District History that four bands from one school be granted the highest honors for their unprecedented achievements, an award few schools have ever obtained throughout Texas.  There are 245 (5A) schools in Texas, only three had all 4 bands earn sweepstakes (Keller, Duncanville, Cedar Park).

This also marks 12 consecutive years for KHS Bands to earn the coveted UIL Sweepstakes Award!
