 Art Instruction in KISD

Formal art instruction is offered at all secondary campuses in Keller ISD.  Students are introduced to the elements of art and continue through basic design, methods and materials. Beginning at the seventh grade level student may select art as an elective.  By challenging their imaginations with new techniques and materials, the students refine their skills by expressing their thoughts and ideas creatively.  At the high school level students may enroll in College level Advanced Placement courses.  All students are given the opportunity to participate in the annual district-wide art competition and show.

 Congressional Art Competition

Three KISD Students win 12th District Congressional Art Competition. Kay Granger, U.S. Representative for Congressional District 12, recently announced the winners of the 2009 Annual “Artistic Discovery” Art Competition.

Central High student Sarah Wright won the 1st Place Grand Prize for her stunning Prismacolor drawing titled “Puzzle”.
Sarah’s artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. through June 2010.  Sarah and two guests will be flown to Washington for the national exhibition opening reception on June 24, 2009.  Sarah will also receive a $200 U.S. Savings Bond and Scholarships from Texas Christian University and Savannah College of Art and Design.

Fossil Ridge student Kimberly Hill won 2nd Place. Her piece named “Handstand” is done in a mixture of art media including collage, spray paint, and colored pencil. Kimberly’s artwork will be displayed in Congresswoman Kay Granger’s office through June 2009 and she will receive a $150.00 U.S. Savings Bond.

Central High student Richard Ward won 3rd Place for his exceptional computer piece titled, “Innocence”.  Richard’s artwork will be displayed in Congresswoman Kay Granger’s office through June 2009 and he will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.  Another piece of Richard’s artwork was selected as the grand prize in 2008 and is currently on display in the U.S. Capitol in Washington D. C.

On Saturday May 2, 2009, the District 12 Congressional Art Competition Reception was hosted by Congresswoman Kay Granger at the Wells Fargo Bank.

 Visual Art Scholastic Event

The Texas Art Education (TAEA) has sponsored the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) since 1994. VASE is the only art event of its kind in the nation. Students have the opportunity to bring artworks created in their art classes to a regional event where they are interviewed by a certified juror who evaluates their work according to a standards-based rubric as well as their understanding of the art processes involved in the development of their artwork. The State Event is held annually in April and is sponsored by the University of Houston-Clear Lake. While the artworks are judged, students participate in professional workshops, lectures, slide presentations, demonstrations, and outdoor sketching opportunities.
